Shanny Wise is a cool girl. Effortlessly chic. Microphone in hand, her nonchalant stage presence was accompanied by a sleek, matching red set and teeny sunglasses.
Wise is half of the NYC-based duo. She met her counterpart, Jackson Walker Lewis, in the city through mutual friends. And thus, in a post-pandemic haze and mutual love of electronic music, Fcukers was born.
Two short singles were released in late 2023, and that's all it took for them to start booking gigs.
Though they don’t identify with the ‘indie-sleaze revival’ title, they have been constantly grouped in with those acts who do. The Dare, Chanel Beads, Frost Children; it’s music that makes you want to jump out of your skin and dance.
However, despite their rapid growth, it wasn’t until this past year that they dropped their debut album.
Introducing producer Kenneth Blume, a.k.a. Kenny Beats.
Blume has made a significant name for himself through his work in the hip-hop space. He met with Wise and Walker Lewis for the first time in the studio, and by the end of the day, the three made ‘L.U.C.K.Y,’ the second single off their debut.
Months later, said debut “Ö” was released, followed by an international tour. I had the pleasure of capturing the duo at their Chicago show last week.
Sex Week, another New York-based duo, graced the stage as the opening act. Their melodic and haunting tunes swayed the crowd. But it wasn’t long until that gentle sway turned into a bouncing of the feet.
The funky, electronic beat of their song ‘Mothers’ started to play as Wise and Walker Lewis appeared on stage. From the mezzanine to the floor to the opera boxes, there wasn’t a still body in the venue.
And despite the dark lighting of Thalia Hall, sunglasses occupied the faces of every audience member.
Were they trying to be as effortlessly cool as Shanny? I think yes, but who am I to say!
