If you live in Brooklyn, you might have felt the ground shaking last Tuesday evening. No, it wasn’t an earthquake, although that’s never really high on the list of probable causes in New York anyways. Nevertheless… it was the explosive energy from the Feng show at the Music Hall of Williamsburg.
Just barely 20 years old, Feng has already burst out of the UK underground rap scene as a prolific, up-and-coming talent. As a wave of British rappers expand their fanbases across the pond in a sort of modern-day underground ‘British Invasion,’ Feng has quickly solidified himself as a global name. Fresh off the heels of his debut album ‘Weekend Rockstar,’ he set off on his first-ever headlining run: the Weekend Rockstar Tour. We were fortunate enough to cover his highly-anticipated New York City stop– the grand finale of his US leg– and if there’s one thing we can say about a Feng show, it’s that the foundations of the venue will genuinely be put to the test.
Feng fans come to a show to truly just lose their minds. There’s no other way to put it. I moved about the venue, finding every angle to be shockingly intimate. No matter where I stood I had a great view and could feel every pulse of bass. But after the first bit of the show (where he, of course, opened with fan-favorite ‘XY’) I rotated up to the balcony, and watching the collective movement of the fans from above was like watching some sort of choreographed riot.
Song after song, fans continuously opened moshpits. There was no barricade separating the floor from the stage either, which created this sort of magnetic-like motion. Whenever Feng drew to the edge of the stage, the crowd pulled inwards toward him, and then the moment he leapt back to dance, the sea of fans exploded outward with just as much energy.
After a night of pure chaos, Feng closed his set with his 3 most-anticipated songs, all in a row: ‘Teenage Famous,’ ‘Princess,’ and finally, ‘XOXO.’ The fans filed out riled-up and dripping in sweat. I’d imagine a good amount of them kept their nights going, riding the energy high that Feng gave them. His set was electric from start to finish. If you’re in North America, you’ll have to keep up with Feng on socials to find out when your next opportunity to catch him live will be, but if you’re in Europe then you’re in luck: his Weekend Rockstar tour is taking off all throughout Europe this fall.
